Often, the duet grows out of a family unit – sisters, brothers, father and son or mother and daughter – and sometimes, two solo artists come together for a one-off recording, but whatever the reason, when two voices find that they complement each other, it is very often a formula for popular success. Mae’n anodd esbonio beth yn hollol yw apêl dau lais yn canu mewn harmoni, ond mae’n sicr wedi bod yn nodwedd amlwg o ganu poblogaidd Cymraeg ers tro byd. Enw sy’n taro cloch i lawer, yn enwedig yn ardal Dyffryn Nantlle, yw’r Brodyr Francis, ac mae’n bosib dadlau mai nhw oedd y ‘cantorion pop’ cyntaf yn y diwylliant Cymraeg, ond yn anffodus, nid oes unrhyw recordiad ohonynt (hyd y gwyddom) ar gael. Mae enwau’r brodyr Jac a Wil o Gefneithin yn dod o gyfnod ychydig yn diweddarach, a’u disgiau yn dal i werthu’n rheolaidd. Ar eu hôl nhw daeth nifer o ddeuawdau i serennu wrth i’r byd pop Cymraeg dyfu, a chlywir rhai ohonyn nhw yn y casgliad hwn – Aled a Reg, Tony ac Aloma, Vernon a Gwynfor a Rosalind a Myrddin yn eu plith. Wrth i ganu gwlad fagu gwreiddiau yn Gymraeg, daeth nifer o ddeuawdau eraill fel Iona ac Andy a John ac Alun, Broc Môr a Dylan a Neil, i’r amlwg. Mae’r rhan fwyaf a enwyd wedi gwneud eu marc fel deuawdau sefydlog, ond weithiau daw dau lais unigol at ei gilydd ar gyfer gwneud recordiad arbennig, a dyna a ddigwyddodd gyda Gillian Elisa a Iona, Wil Tân a Karen Mônheli, Edward a Mary Hopkin a Huw Jones a Heather. Yn achos ‘Gary a Susan’, daeth Bryn Fôn a Morfudd Hughes at ei gilydd ar gyfer cyfres deledu am ddeuawd canu gwlad, ac wrth gwrs roedd Ryan a Ronnie yn enwog fel deuawd gomedi yn ogystal â deuawd gerddorol. Difyr hefyd yw sylwi ar y cyslltiad teuluol sydd rhwng cynifer o’r deuawdau Cymraeg hyn – Rosalind a Myrddin, Iona ac Andy (gwr a gwraig), Dylan a Neil (tad a mab), Brodyr Gregory a Broc Môr (brodyr), Tonig (dwy chwaer), a Gwenda a Geinor (mam a merch). Ond beth bynnag yw’r rheswm, mae’r casgliad hwn yn profi fod poblogrwydd ac apêl y ddau lais Cymraeg mewn harmoni cyn gryfed ag erioed. Dafydd Iwan
